The European Commission published at the start of this year the Entrepreneurship 2020 Action Plan, a blueprint for decisive action to unleash Europe's entrepreneurial potential and boost entrepreneurship and innovation culture in Europe.
'SMALL BUSINESSES REPRESENT THE MOST IMPORTANT SOURCE OF EMPLOYEMENT IN THE EU: THEY CREATE MORE THAN4 MILLION JOBS EACH YEAR.'
Entrepreneurship holds a key role in the creation of new companies, the Commission's communication states that 'SMEs, represent the most important source of new employment in the EU: they create more than 4 million new jobs every year in Europe.' Eurostars, the EUREKA programme designed for small companies plays a key role in fostering entrepreneurship and employment, by offering start-ups a chance to develop innovative high-tech products. A recent analysis of the projects financed through Eurostars and of the companies participating in the programme shows that, as a direct result of their participation in Eurostars, small businesses will employ on average 4 new staff members three years after the completion of their project.
The Action Plan proposes three main areas of immediate intervention aiming at enhancing entrepreneurial education and support to business creation: strengthen framework conditions for entrepreneurs by removing existing structural barriers, support to entrepreneurs in crucial phases of the business lifecycle, dynamise the culture of entrepreneurship in Europe in order to nurture a new generation of entrepreneurs.
