Project Description
The objective of the project is development of a silicon
micromachined acceleration switch for use in airbag
systems. High volume production technologies to be used
are at present implemented at SENSONOR. This should give
performance and cost advantages in comparison with
traditional electromechanical acceleration switches
presently used in airbag systems.
Using silicon micromechanical technology the chip size will
be a few square millimetres, making the encapsulated
component suitable for surface mounting on a PCB.
Keywords: silicon, microswitch, safety sensor.
Technological Development Envisaged
The technical challenge stems primarily from making a
device which operates reliably in spite of extremely low
contact forces. This will require developing a novel
device concept as well as finding a suitable material
system for the electrodes. Technological advances are also
needed to ensure hermetic sealing of the internal cavity
containing the switch element.
