The aim of the project is to ensure research and development of a modular system "Logistics RFID Gate - LOGI-GATE". The system is designed so as to ensure retrieving information from an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag located on the vehicle (rail or road) with the vehicle speed up to 100 km/h or logistics unit speed up to 30 km/h and then transfer the uploaded information (information from the chip, time and location of the gate) into the central information systems of transport undertakings, carriers, infrastructure managers, warehouse operators, etc. A part of the project is the production of a prototype of the system LOGI-GATE and its verification in operation in rail freight transport, with road carriers and warehouse operators. The system mentioned consists of stationary reader gates and a central part which are linked by means of radio communication. Stationary reader gates will include hardware components (RFID antenna, RFID reader, reader management system, GSM (Global Standard for Mobiles) modem, UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)) and software components (system, communication and application software). The central part will contain the tools for a communication gateway, service management system for the diagnostics of hardware and software components of the gate reader and software for integration of the central applications (transport undertakings, carriers, infrastructure managers, warehouse operators, etc.). The LOGI-GATE system is designed as an open system, and its capabilities and functionalities may be extended at any time. Research and development activities will focus on the fulfilment of the following estimated requirements for LOGI-GATE: - To load (retrieve) information contained in the RFID TAG on the wagons included in the train, on the various road vehicles (semi-trailers and trailers) and logistics units crossing through the reading device; - To identify vehicles or logistic units and assign them to the relevant parameters from the database; - To identify the order of wagons in the train, the order of vehicles going in a queue and the direction of their movement; - To send uploaded information via the communication infrastructure into a communication gateway; - To provide additional distribution of information to the central applications (internal systems) of transport undertaking, carrier, infrastructure manager and other users by means of a developed plug-in; - To provide the remote control and to manage the application software of the gate reader; - To provide the remote diagnostics of any HW (hardware) components of the gate reader; - To store, collect and provide information about the place and time of occurrence of any vehicle or logistic unit loaded from the tag; The project is in accordance with EU priorities. RFID issues and its solution appear in the "Action Plan of freight transport and logistics within the EU" - eFreight, which was published in December 2008 as the "Action Plan ITS" by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION.
Currently, RFID technology is in turbulent development, especially in the field of logistics solutions and warehouse operations. In the transport sector, it is more developed in the field of road transport and partly in air transport. Wholesale deployment is not yet seen in rail transport, because the technological conditions of operation are more complicated than in other transport modes. Principles of interoperability in rail transport stay only at the beginning to be more applied in practice. It seems to be more progressive in the promotion of such an interoperable technology.

Our technological contribution to the project LOGI-GATE is the insertion of knowledge and experience from other RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and GPS (Global Positioning System) projects handled in Austria. This means experiences from "Locomotive detection" and from the project "Railreader" as well as from a sensor-box for combined transport. The Locomotive detection is a programme from the OEBB TRAKTION GMBH. One part of this programme is the detection of the locomotives/trains by the use of RFID (at the station) and GPS (in move) and the electronic train schedule as well as communication via GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). The RFID-Railreader allows measurements from infrastructure measuring points, such as wheel flats, hot boxes, etc., to assign to the correct train axle, to stop the train if a certain threshold value is exceeded. This development project is driven by OEBB INFRASTRUKTUR. The next step will be the development of a "multi-reader station". This interoperable reader station will be able to detect passive and active RFID as well as other technologies (e.g. infrared or microwave). The sensor-box project deals with the implementation of sensors (position, temperature, humidity, acceleration, shock, brightness, etc.) in a self-supplied box. Finally all these approaches are joined in a logistics chain and terminal management system. We also try to implement these approaches in other European countries. EUREKA would be a great help in carrying out this step across the border.
The expertise of the company DI Alexander Chloupek - ABC CONSULTING - lies in the unique advisory services provided for traffic projects. The core business is therefore project management and project development. We are now involved in about 15 national R&D projects. We work together with major companies like OEBB, the transport ministry and the Austrian R&D fund (FFG).
