The aim of the BATAN project is to develop and realise new functionalised textiles with high added value, barrier and filter properties. Specially designed and customised textile constructions and technologies of (multi)functional treatments, incl. nano-fibre and nano-surface structures will be studied to launch new end-products and service solutions related to barrier fabrics for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), filters and technical light-weight barrier textiles. All project work is focused on modern solutions covering combination of customised design and fabric constructions, surface pre-activation for embedding of nano-fibres, surface functionalisation, coating and creation of surface nano-layers to achieve totally new properties. Niche laundry services to increase textile performance and prolong their use to enhance economical and ecological effectiveness of new products will be included. Sustainable European textile industry build on exploring and implementation of customised and tailor-made products, product service-rendering business and high technology applications. New functional (surface) treatments based on nanotechnology provides immense potential for textile industry compared to the existing solutions i.e. in filter, barrier and absorbing applications of malevolent substances such as air pollution, infective agents, toxic gases or noise. Multifunctional textiles will expand to industrial and health care sectors to improve the safety and comfort of end-users. New textile carriers of (multi)functional properties, pre-activated carriers of (durable) nano-fibrous structures and tailor made finishing, surface coating and lamination processes made by use of specially designed polymers and speciality products (textile auxiliary agents TAA) will be developed (WP1) to open the way to the new customised products. Focused market and technical product application areas are: Protective barrier textiles and clothing (WP2). The applications refer to textiles for PPE with multifunctional barrier properties which are one of the six highlighted "lead market initiative" product categories just due to the high influence on public health and safety as an integral part of public procurement strategy. New industrial sectors and expanding use of new technologies (microelectronic, IT, biotech) and focus on the quality and safety of life improvement open space for new high quality/added value product. Special attention will be paid to physiological parameters of developed solutions: breathability, transmission of liquids and humidity (moisture management) and resistivity against microbial contamination and their durability in repeated washing cycles. The focus is on protective clothing and workwear for personal safety and security in industrial and civil sphere (medical, microelectronics, automotive and food industry, hospitals, etc.). High efficient filter textiles (WP3). The application areas include special filter materials and filters, protective masks, face cloths, and protective covers for air filtration, air conditioning and light-weight barrier applications. Markets focus on industrial and health care requiring high hygiene and cleanliness such as clean rooms and operating theatres, or elevated safety and security including civil defence in crisis and catastrophes. Light-weight and small-size textile filters will be studied containing nano-fibre layers and surface treatments. These materials will take advantage of modified nanostructures on specially constructed textile substrates. Light weight nano-fibre containing structures will be studied for acoustic sound and noise management. The technological contribution of the Textile Research Institute to the BATAN project is based on knowledge, first of all, in the field of fabrics made by the weft-knitting technique, and particularly within the scope of designing the structure and raw materials for knitted fabrics, technical/technological parameters of knitting processes as well as standard and special finishing treatments including a new generation of chemical compounds and dyes. This knowledge allows one to develop and modify, among others, the technology of making knitted fabrics with imparted barrier properties designed for protective clothing against the action of heat at high temperatures, static electricity and microbiological effects, simultaneously including the features that characterize the comfort of using end products. Moreover, the co-operation planned comprises designing the structures of garment fabrics using the knitted fabrics mentioned and developing technologies of their making-up. The laboratory back-up facilities of the Institute includes equipment that guarantees the multi-aspect assessment of knitted fabrics and goods within the scope of structural, functional and physiological properties as well as the imparted protective barrier features. On the other hand, the technical back-up facilities allow one to carry out technological trials of knitting processes. Therefore the Institute’s competences presented constitute a base for performing special research and development works on the development of the technology of multi-functional textiles fulfilling the high requirements imposed to clothing fabrics to be used as a personal protection under the conditions of work environment hazards.
