Participating Countries, Project Managing companies and Coordinators. The HALIOS project is partnered by companies of four countries. The partners are the leaders of the Project in their own countries. SPAIN: Phases A, B and C: SOERMAR (SOCIEDAD PARA EL ESTUDIO DE LOS RECURSOS MARINOS) FRANCE: Phases A, B and C: IFREMER (INSTITUT FRANCAIS DE RECHERCHE POUR L'EXPLOITATION DE LA MER) ICELAND: Phases A and B: F.I.I.(FEDERATION OF ICELANDIC INDUSTRIES). UNITED KINGDOM: Phases A and B: DTI (DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY). These companies and organisation will be responsible for directing, managing and coordinating the HALIOS Project. They will support the initiatives presented by companies in their respective countries, facilitating international collaboration. They will make easier the proceduresfor obtaining Administrative grants and loans. Project Decisions, Subprojects. Industrial technological initiatives are presented by companies in the four countries following simple common EUREKA procedures. After evaluation, the proposals which are approved by the HALIOS organisation are called "subprojects." Approval is given by the HALIOS Steering Committee, which takes all the relevant project decisions at meetings attended also by EUREKA representatives of the countries. Project Phases Phases A+B: These phases include all subprojects directed towards the definition, design, development, tests and homologation of systems, equipment and operational groups which could be integrated in fishing vessels in the technological areas described in paragraph 7. The HALIOS Project considers not only those subprojects which may be application to the vessel families represented by HALIOS prototype vessels, but also those applicable to the rest of fishing vessels. Phase C: This last project phase consists of the development of design technologies specific to fishing vessels, of the drawing up of vessel projects and the construction of prototype vessels. This phase's objectives will be, then: - Definition of vessel "families" representing prototype HALIOS vessels and definition of the prototypes - Development of design technologies to be incorporated in the projects of fishing vessels for the future, oriented preferably to the vessel "families" defined, but not excluding those design technologies representing an interest for the fishing sector. - Development of vessel projects that incorporate the above design technologies as well as the technological developments of phases A + B. - Construction of some prototype vessels representing the defined "families." International Collaboration Following the programme "spirit", the technological collaboration between companies of EUREKA countries is encouraged through the presentation of common proposals for the development of the subprojects. Note: from the above project description, it can be ascertained that this EUREKA Application Form gives information on the HALIOS Project as a whole and about its leading partners in the four countries and not about subprojects nor companies participating in them. Therefore some of the form points are not applicable. This project brings together nearly all the companies involved with industrial fishing vessels in FRANCE and SPAIN (shipyards, shipowners and engineering consultants, equipment manufacturers and classification societies) and equipment manufacturers of ICELAND, the UNITED KINGDOM or other EUREKA countries.
The technological innovations which this project features will be developed in a coordinated manner in the following 8 fields: - Detection systems: development of technologies for improved identification and location of fish. - Fishing gear: automation and introduction of robot techniques in fishing operations. - On-board processing of fish: automation of sorting and processing; improving the quality of the product. - Storage, loading and unloading of fish: automated processes for storing and handling fish in bulk and in containers when loading and unloading the hold, without human intervention. - Energy saving: integration of equipment and systems, development of new concepts for improving energy yields to reduce operating costs. - Navigation and communications systems: application of telecommunications systems to improve availability, processing and utilisation of on-board information and increase operational efficiency and safety of navigation. - Safety of the ship and crew; automated management of safety parameters for the ship and its crew under the conditions in which the vessel is operating. - Habitability and ergonomics: improved living conditions for the crews. The results of these technological developments will be incorporated in the prototype vessels in a rational manner, to make them: - safer - more efficient - more viable - more comfortable.
