The touring management system

The objective of the touring management system is to provide a technological instrument to improve tourism strategy and competitiveness, thereby optimising decision-making on tourist destinations.

The project proposes to integrate an IT-platform (Touring Machine or TM) to support generic tourism planning and decision-making. Using this platform, the tourism decision-makers will rely on a system to model and manage tourism destinations (The Touring Management System, TMS). The TM shall enable tourism experts to build a variety of models and simulators of tourism activities. It shall have access to tourism-related data of different sorts and it shall integrate multiple modelling tools in order to provide a convenient environment for tourism decision-makers to analyse specific questions and visualise new destinations and development alternatives. TMS will be a tourism market simulator that would allow the dynamic modelling of different types of destinations. It shall be constructed using the Touring Machine, thus not only requiring the loading into TM of all pertinent data and modelling tools, but also demonstrating the functionality the platform it is intended to achieve. The building of models for tourism destinations has a history of approximately a decade and has customarily been based on the formulation of deterministic models of an econometric nature, where equational interactions among relevant variables describe the functionality of tourism destinations. However, these models have been shown to be ineffective up to the present in formulating valid strategies for public and private decision-making. TMS will contribute to a better management of tourism destinations, through a conceptual and technological model which for the first time in the history of the tourism industry will enable the best procedures to be established for: a) The functional definition of a typology of tourism destinations/ clusters. b) The establishment of management indicators compatible with the WORLD TOURISM ORGANISATION's tourism satellite account system, the United Nations Statistical System and EUROSTAT. c) The inter-temporal and inter-spatial comparability of tourism destinations with the same typology with considerable advantages for benchmarking. d) The dynamic analysis of the evolution of tourism destinations, anticipating the depletion of basic resources, load-capacity saturation, loss of competitiveness and/ or of strategic positioning. e) The design of frameworks for the simulation of the consequences of management with the consequent applications for public and private decision-making in tourism destinations.
