Amorphous silicon is a recent semiconductor whose
applications in various areas (photovoltaics, electronics,
office systems, robotics, etc.) are still at the
development stage. The project is aimed at the development
of a European amorphous silicon industry with, in Phase 1
and 2, two areas of application:
- in photovoltaics, as a source of autonomous electric
power supply for small consumption equipment (clocks,
watches, portable measuring instruments, security and
surveillance systems, remote controllers, etc.,) as well
as for specific applications in the automotive industry.
- in office systems, robotics and medical apparatus, as a
light sensor with a response very close to that of the
human eye (measuring instruments, shape and position
detectors, robotics sensors for scanners, etc.).
Contribution to a third category of application, liquid
crystal flat screens driven by amorphous, silicon-based
thin-film transistors, is envisaged by a later, third phase
of the project.
