The use of processing agents in the production of plastics

The use of new, low cost processing agents in polymer processing as a way of reducing flow instabilities. This will improve the quality of the parts made and will increase the rate of production.

The general objective of the project is to help introduce innovative procedures to the CYPRUS plastics industry as a way of reducing production costs with a parallel increase in the quality of the final parts. This need derives from the increased competition the industry is facing due to international competition and the harmonization process as a result of the country's accession to the European Union. The project will concentrate on the use of low-cost processing agents in the production of plastic products. These agents are fairly new and, unlike traditional agents, they can be added in small quantities. The agents shift the stability window for the process by suppressing flow instabilities. Therefore, the presence of the agents allows faster production rates with a commensurate increase in the quality of the parts. For the purposes of the project, and for long-term fundamental research at the pre-competitive level, five companies representing the majority of the market in CYPRUS have been organised in a formal research consortium by the UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS.
