Lossless/lossy image compression hardware solution

DATORU DROSIBAS TEHNOLOGIJAS (DDT) has been working on a new, universal lossless data compression technique for more than two years. The project 'Lossless/Lossy Image Compression Hardware Solution' is an inseparable part of this work. Continuation of the project must be seen in the context of what has been achieved so far as well as our future plans. DDT's research in the area of universal lossless data compression has led to significant accomplishments in the field, resulting in a new data compression method with the following properties: * A high degree of compression at very high speed; * A simple data structure, leading to a simple and inexpensive application and, especially, a simple and inexpensive hardware solution; * Economising technical resources is especially important in mobile device solutions; * Super-symmetry, which is important in the compression of small data packets; * A predictable compression/decompression time for embedded solutions; * A good worst-case compression time for the software solution. Comparative tests of various data compression techniques convincingly show that the C language libraries developed based on DDT's method have a compression/decompression speed that exceeds the leading competing methods by a factor of at least 10 on comparable degrees of compression. The end result of the project 'Lossless/Lossy Image Compression Hardware Solution' is to write a data compression kernel description using HDL (Hardware Description Language) and to create a demonstration kit on one of the leading FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) manufacturers' (XILINX, ALTERA, ACTEL and others) chips. This would, in practical terms, be a finished product for the so-called 'IP (Intellectual Property) core' market, which comprises a variety of algorithm solutions for chips and systems developers and manufacturers. In terms of work done hitherto and our future plans, this is an important stage in the creation of a package of intellectual property in accordance with international best practices. DDT has filed for a patent in LATVIA, which ensures international priority, as well as for an international patent for its 'Method and apparatus for lossless compression and decompression of data'. DDT has also registered the trademark 'FLYZIP', which is used for data compression products already sold to the end user market. The project 'Lossless/Lossy Image Compression Hardware Solution' end result in the form of HDL code and an IP core will be an important contribution to the creation of an intellectual property package. Evaluations of the hardware implementation of the new method modification for image compression, which will be developed through the project 'Lossless/Lossy Image Compression Hardware Solution', show that, thanks to the unique combination of properties mentioned above, a series of very efficient and competitive solutions can be developed both for the existing hardware image compression technology market segment as well as for applications which do not currently exist because of the limitations of current compression methods.
