The 'dynamic garden' - fitness, movement and health for all ages in public space

The dynamic gardens are planned to be placed in public spaces accessible at all times in order to motivate people of different target groups to move, play and communicate, thereby effectively supporting fitness, prevention and health.

BACKGROUND The proposed project simultaneously addresses a number of issues - all of which are either of extreme relevance or of enormous potential for social and economic development: 1. The individual assessment of Quality of Life, implicitly or explicitly, is connected to physical abilities and the possibility of being self-sustaining and active much more than to the effective medical handling of disabilities and disfunctionalities - in short, prevention is the better choice compared to rehabilitation. So far, there is still limited scope for comprehensive, targeted 'prevention activities'; gyms for some are expensive, mostly indoors, and usually only geared to certain target groups. In the proposed project we therefore like to offer free or cheap access to effective and motivating outdoor movement opportunities at all times geared for large target groups. 2. Public health insurance systems in many countries are on the brink of collapse, while some services are being severely reduced. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of solutions that keep people healthy, to reduce the needs and costs for curing or coping with illnesses. 3. Obesity among young people is one of the biggest problems throughout most of Europe. It is a ticking time bomb: Life-long health is a life-long challenge; kids are ill-prepared for physical ageing and many among the younger generations today will need heart and body treatment at a very young age. 4. Senior Citizens have an enormous economic power where there is a lack of communication and integration as well as suitable physical challenges. In the proposed project we will be exploring ways of how to address these needs and possibly generate funding, yet not exclude public access to the dynamic gardens. OBJECTIVE The objective of the proposed project in first place is the development of new system solutions for these dynamic gardens. With the term system solution we express our conviction that it is not enough to design individual pieces of equipment only. Much more than that, a comprehensive conceptualisation and development of all installations for a dynamic garden, plus the interaction of these elements in a balanced environment is what is necessary. Furthermore, the question of financing, administration, maintenance and access has to be addressed; possibly new solutions developed. In the second place, we will address how these dynamic gardens can be integrated into the everyday life of people. Here we address questions like which political measures will support the use of the dynamic gardens for the sake of improving the health and well-being of the people, where installations can best be positioned, and how continuous improvement and further development can be ensured.
