The intelligent battery

Define, design and implement the concept of an intelligent battery to extend life time, increase efficiency, and reduce cost and energy.

The main participant, ABERTAX, submitted a patent on the intelligent battery concept. The idea is to research and develop an advanced battery that has integrated electronics and an innovative structural design to ensure flexibility, a longer lifetime and efficient use of the stored energy. This idea involves a holistic approach to creating a complete new design concept that integrates various essential components into one reliable product. This will ensure that the battery will operate with optimum efficiency and performance while ensuring a long lifetime. The idea involves the development of a battery with embedded electronics that will sense different critical parameters and control the load and charger while sending the necessary messages to the operator. The development requires experts who will research and develop a number of areas, namely: - Structural design of the special structure that will facilitate the set-up process as well as space optimisation. - Internal plate design to ensure the maximum capacity in the space available. - Battery gas release sensor that will reduce the water loss in the battery and hence increase the lifetime of the battery. ABERTAX has another patent on this and at the moment we are conducting the field tests of our first prototypes. - The embedded electronic circuit design that will sense the necessary battery condition and provide signals to the display, while controlling the charger and load. - The display design that can be used with various applications to avoid unnecessary costs to the customer by installing an intelligent display that might contain processing power that is already available in the embedded circuit. - The charger that will accept the signals from the electronic circuit and control the charging current if the battery overheats. The battery itself is the standard gel type, sealed lead-acid, however the casing design and the additional integration of all components for optimising the performance are all new and included in the patent. The design of this battery can also incorporate any other technology apart from lead acid, like Li-Ion and NiMeH. The project is planned to proceed as follows: 1) Modelling and simulations: 3 months 2) Housing structure and electronics design: 8 months 3) Manufacturing of prototypes: 6 months 4) Laboratory testing: 3 months 5) Field testing: 6 months 6) Analysis of results: 4 months.
