Lifetime optimisation and renovation of forging dies usinglaser cladding process

To develop technologies enhancing the lifetime of forming and forging dies by means of hard layers deposited and sintered by laser beam. Design concepts of hot working dies will be optimised in order to lower the tooling costs and optimize the material exploitation.

The aim of the project is to develop technologies enhancing the lifetime of forming and forging dies by means of hard layers deposited and sintered by laser beam. Design concepts of hot working dies will be optimized in order to lower the tooling costs and optimize the material exploitation. Furthermore new approaches for renovation of worn dies using laser cladding process will be developed. The research will be focused on modification of active surfaces of dies in order to enhance their wear resistence and lifetime. In order to achieve this goal following key activities will be performed by the project team: - finding of optimum powder materials for layers - optimization of the laser cladding process (cladding technique, layer thickness etc.) - analysis of phase transformations in surface layers, depth of the heat affected zone, residual stresses etc. - analysis of mechanical properties of layers – micro- and macrohardness curves, fatigue behavior, high temperature strength etc. - analysis of technological properties – wear resistance, tribological properties, high temperature stability, machinability etc. - simulation of thermal and mechanical stresses in order to identify critical areas where failures can occur - modification of tools design and tooling technologies according to project results - verification of project results on real products in the field production
