New technologies, new design of components and
environmentally-acceptable use of energy in order to achieve
further development in power semi-conductor technology

Technological constraints of the semiconductor devices are preventing not only further optimisation in existing applications, but also the penetration of power semiconductor in the broad field of energy utilisation, for example, in all cases where the power control of motors could be introduced to advantage. In order to achieve further development in power semiconductor technology and thus a possible break-through in the application of these elements in the environmentally acceptable utilisation of energy, new techniques and new designs of components must be introduced. These are already available to some extent in the integrated circuits (IC) industry, but require considerable investment to adapt them; other techniques and structures have to be newly developed to achieve the desired functions and combinations of parameters economically.
