This workshop will aim to promote a debate between scientists, industrial representatives and EU politicians on the role of Materials Science and Engineering in the design of advanced materials (as elements of growth of European competitiveness, cf. ‘Horizon 2020’ objectives concerning Europe's productivity and innovation capacity).
Key statements:
- Materials R&D is crucial to the better implementation of the industrial leadership and societal grand challenges pillars of ‘Horizon 2020’.
- Future materials R&D has to relay on two main concepts:
a. Outstanding improvement of existing materials in order to enable the European industry towards the full implementation of zero-waste, LCA, sustainable concepts, and assuring a competitive technological advantage.
b. To promote and support a paradigmatic change in Materials Science and Engineering by moving to a material by design approach based on a full integration of material/process/component concepts with the goal to produce new European value products for the market.
