FUNDING SCHEME

Funding in Belgium

Funding of RD&I projects is granted by the regional Funding Bodies, and in exceptional cases by the federal Authorities. Funding applications for EUREKA projects are evaluated by experts according to technology, market potential, management and financing. The funding may be a low-interest loan or a grant, depending on the stage of the innovation and the nature of the proposed project. A project may involve also international cooperation and researcher mobility. Several types of funding are available through the ISRIB (Brussels), IWT (Flanders) and SPW DG06 (Wallonia). However, the general funding rules are shown in the table below:

General procedure

EUREKA is intended for market driven projects. The evaluation is done on a national level by technical and economic experts and the procedure lasts 2-4 months. The funding takes into account the return on investment for the country (payback period, added value for the company or research centre, ....), and the contribution of the project results to the competitiveness of the local economy.

Restrictions

The proposers are expected to have an economic payback out of the project results.
