Sixty-seven freshly elected European parliamentarians were appointed as members of the ITRE committee on Industry, Research and Energy on July 3rd, 2014. The committee's activities are key to European industrial and innovation policies and their associated EU budgets.

Jerzy Buzek (EPP), Poland’s prime minister from 1997 to 2001, has been nominated as chair of the committee in its constituent meeting of July 7th. An important supporter of EUREKA and the Eurostars programme, Mr. Buzek was the Parliament’s rapporteur for Framework Programme 7, the predecessor to the €80 billion Horizon 2020 research and innovation flagship, of which the Eurostars programme for innovative SMEs is a part.
The vice-chairs of the committee include Patrizia Toia (S&D), already an ITRE vice-chair in the last legislature, Hans-Olaf Henkel(ECR), Miloslav RANSDORF (GUE) rapporteur for Eurostars-2 and Morten Helveg PETERSEN (ALDE).
Among long-standing 17 ITRE members re-elected are Austria’s Paul Rübig (EPP) a long time backer of EUREKA and rapporteur for Eurostars during Framework Programme 7 and Christian Ehler (EPP), a rapporteur for another EU funding programme: Fast Track to Innovation.
