The European Union has been a member of EUREKA since the start of the initiative in 1985.
In 2000, the EU decided to create the European Research Area (ERA). Such an ERA should inspire the best talents to enter research careers in Europe, incite industry to invest more in European research – contributing to the EU objective to devote 3% of GDP for research, and strongly contribute to the creation of sustainable growth and jobs.
Achieving the ERA requires a restructuring of the European research landscape through the progressive opening up and networking of the compartmentalised national and regional research resources. EUREKA therefore, has a crucial role to play in this process.
