Multi-sensors intelligent system based on opp electronics for real time monitoring of shelf,lifetime&status of products

Out-of-shelf is common problem in the store today. Instead of conducting physical store audit, this project is aimed to develop a complex monitoring system for measuring the exact number of the products on the shelf and functions of measuring: temperature and humidity on the shelf, products weight.

The term “out-of-shelf” (OOS) is used to describe situation where a customer does not find the product (or sufficient number of that product) one wishes to buy on the shelf of a supermarket, during a shopping tour. It might be that product exists in the storage, but it is not on the shelf. The problems which lead to the OOS can be sorted in three categories: first are ordering problems (if it is not ordered in time or in enough quantity); second are replenishment problems (not enough stuff for filling the shelves or not enough space on the shelf) and third are delivery problems (referring to the product was not delivered due to out-of-stock situations, other problems with the retailer’s distribution centre or the supplier or the delivery of the wrong product, and the delivery of smaller quantity of products). Our multi-sensor intelligent system is designed to completely solve first and second type of problems. Performing visual and manual inspection by store personnel is slow, expensive, and susceptible to human error. Because of that it is necessary to develop a precise product availability monitoring device or system. Not only products availability on the shelf in the store but their temperature, humidity, etc. are very important parameters in order to provide consumer satisfaction, safety and health. Instead of conducting physical store audit, this project is aimed to develop a complex monitoring system which will be able to measure the exact number of the products on the shelf, temperature on the shelf, humidity on the shelf, products weight, etc. The complete solution with multi-sensors and test platform will be designed and developed based on ink-jet and screen printing technology using flexible substrates such as Kapton film, PET or paper. This project will also provide opening-detector-system to check if the packaging box has been opened once or package has leaking problem and displaying it on the package. Due to use of information technologies (sensors, micro-controllers, displays) and practical realization of intelligent packaging (smart or active shelves in markets) these shelves can communicate with consumers and apply them with all necessary information. Realization of this project will boost productivity and competitiveness the trade sector in the region. Through this project, a solid cooperation between the trade sector (not only SMEs involved in the project, but also all market places planed for implementation of described multi-sensor intelligent system) and innovative institutions from academic sector will be created and developed. Aim of this project is the development of technical solutions, based on absolute modern market technologies, for solving the needs of a wide range of consumers.
