High performance parallel computing software engineering and applications

Hppc-sea aims to promote parallel computing through
development of a hardware independent software engineering
platform, software porting tools, selected subsystems and
vertical applications.

Summary HPPC aims to promote parallel computing in business-related areas, through the packaging of existing tools and the development of some complementary items. In addition, HPPC-SEA will prove the effectiveness of the packaged tools via a selected list of business-oriented applications. Specifically, the packaged toolkit will include: 1. existing XPVM tools extension, in order to cover different topologies more tailored to business situations 2. primitives for data warehouse management, based on MIMD machines 3. images parallel handling primitives, based on MPEG II (Motion Picture Engineering Group) standards 4. migration tool set for databases from mainframes to parallel machines Application components planned for the concurrent delivery at the end of the project are relative to: data farm management: - interactive TV and video on demand service application based on multiple instruction multiple datastream (MIMD) machines financial application: - genetic algorithms for application in the financial credit scoring and credit card issuing medical supporting applications: - simulation model of blood in the anaesthetized body - coronary vessel diagnosis and heart-related illness therapy support. Preliminary Phase Already completed, it has been impacted by the very fast technological innovations introduced in the area by third parties and parallel machine vendors. Technology and market dynamics have forced us to target towards the development of new tools and new environments deriving from practice and trials performed in the meantime. Implementation Phase The four year implementation phase will lead to: 1. a set of parallel software engineering tools around the PVM extensions. That effort will include programming software development activities related to: * data warehouse management, retrieval and analysis toolset based on ORACLE 7 support * moving images compressor based on MPEG II for MIMD machines * application database and software objects porting tools * extension of PVM 2. the development of specific verticial applications in significant market areas such as: * information data farm and video on demand services * healthcare applications related to coronary vessels * simulation of the blood parameters in an anaesthetized person * finance application with genetics algorithms use for credit scoring and credit card issuing.
