Development of a bifacial solar cells and modules using upgraded metallurgical grade silicon (umg-si) as raw material.

The final project objective is to develop bifacial solar cells and modules using upgraded metallurgical grade silicon. The aim is to demonstrate the "proof of concept" of a bifacial solar cell structure applied to a low-cost poly-si raw material.

The present project combines the interest of Silicio FerroSolar (Spain) and iTechSolar (Turkey) companies and their sub-constructors CENER (Spain) and METU-GUNAM (Turkey) to collaborate in the development of advanced structures of solar cells using Upgraded Metallurgical-Grade (UMG) silicon feedstock developed by Silicio FerroSolar. This work brings the opportunity to asses new generation UMG-Si performance. The aim is to confirm that the starting material supplied by Silicio FerroSolar is suitable to fabricate bifacial solar cells with good performance characteristics and long term stability. As a starting point, exhaustive analysis of the UMG silicon wafers and their comparison with standard solar grade material will be performed, by using a standard solar cell structure (Aluminum back surface field, Al-BSF). In the consortium, Silicio FerroSolar has the technology to produce UMG-Si that can be used as a low cost raw material alternative to produce silicon wafer-based solar cells, iTechSolar has the capability to manufacture modules of different cells technologies. Finally, METU-GUNAM and CENER will develop together the technology to process the wafers using a bifacial solar cell structure. The project is envisioned in the following tasks or WP: WP1: Fabrication of feedstock and wafers Silicio FerroSolar will develop UMG silicon feedstock materials with 3 different resistivities to growth silicon wafers along the 2 years period and will supply them to CENER and METU to fabricate the solar cells and characterize all the processes by means of different techniques. WP2: Standard solar cells fabrication (Al-BSF) In this task, CENER and METU will cooperate in the fabrication and extended characterization of solar cells. In this WP, silicon substrates obtained in WP1 and the standard technology (Al-BSF) will be used, together with standard solar grade material. WP3: Bifacial solar cells fabrication This task encompasses the joint development between METU and CENER of a p-type bifacial solar cell using UMG silicon wafers as substrates. The task will run along the whole project period.
