The project goal is to develop innovative technologies for efficient use of auxiliary materials with low toxicity in leather processing for footwear uppers and lining

The special attention focused on the environmental preservation and toxicity minimization has imposed novel routes in the field of auxiliary materials industry for tanning and finishing leather and leather confections. This project is included in the strategic development program aimed to create optimal conditions for respecting requirements imposed by EU Directives through advanced technologies and products, according to long term strategic development in the context of a globalized economy. The objective of the project is to green polluting processes from the leather and footwear industry by developing innovative technologies for efficient use of auxiliary materials with low toxicity in leather processing for footwear uppers and lining. The aim is to reduce consumption of polluting auxiliary materials, wastewater loading and to obtain competitive products on the European market, with a positive impact on the environment and human health. The novelty of the project consists in: - new assortments of bovine leather for footwear uppers and lining tanned and retanned with low environmental impact technologies (e.g. pretanned with glutaraldehyde and tanned with vegetable tanning agents, or tanned with small amounts of chromium salts and vegetable tanning agents); - new footwear with high level of comfort using natural leather developed in the project. The company Taro not have the methods of tanning leather with vegetable tanning agents for footwear uppers and linings. Also, it has not been so far developed a method of dyeing using dyes based on plant extracts. The company Lenox not have a finishing footwear technology with vegetal character. Scientific and technical objectives: - developing new methods of tanning leather for footwear uppers and linings; - reducing the amount of salt in the preservation of hides, with favorable impact on wastewater, and using preservatives accepted by legislation; - development of new methods of dyeing using dyes free of carcinogenic amines or based on plant extracts; - development of new compact methods of dyeing, retanning and fatliquoring using oils with high exhaustion rate and containing biodegradable emulsifiers to reduce wastewater volume and load; - development of new assortments of bovine leather and finished footwear and garments using finishing agents free of noxions solvents, with a positive effect on the work environment and the consumer health; - increasing the comfort and hygiene of footwear and garments made of leather; - promoting the exchange of information between researchers and SMEs in Romania and the countries participating in the project; - increasing the quality and the functionality of footwear products made of leather. Finished leather assortments will be characterized by: chemical analyses, mechanical methods, optical microscopy, SEM, FT-IR, ATD, resistance to mold and CIE L*a*b* colorimetric method. The joint companies will used the obtained results first of all for increasing their economic efficiency, and for widening the range of products for internal or external market. Exploitation way: - introducing in the production line the materials and methods for tanning and finishing natural leather; - introducing in the production line the new models for shoes; - offering to beneficiaries. The project theme, ECOLEATHER&SHOES, is one with a great actuality and financing this project will represents for our young researches team, a stage of great importance in following a scientific carrier, offering excellent training and new possibilities to test their ideas and to develop new areas of expertise in Romania, Turkey and Europe. Project implementation will increase economic efficiency materialized into financial effects, as well as significant technological effects, particularly related to creating high quality products and prototypes, and reducing environmental pollution.
