Optimisation of loading of oversized goods and special equipment on open railway wagons

Research and development of software application for optimisation of loading goods that is dimensionally big or larger than the standard consignment, particularly special types of equipment, such as trams, tractors, harvesters etc. And selected types of military equipment on open railway wagons

The project addresses the process of optimal loading of oversized goods and special equipment on open railway wagons. The result is a web software application that allows gathering of all necessary input data for special goods or equipment, which is planned for rail transportation on open wagons. Using the input data, the spatial envelope of special items or special equipments will capture along with the determination of the weight and centre of gravity. The appropriate open railway wagons will be automatically selected according to specified input parameters. The next logical step is calculation of alternative ways of loading the goods on selected rail wagons under the terms of UIC (International Union of Railways). For purposes of comparison, under the terms of SMGS (Agreement on Direct International Goods Transport by Rail and Procedure Instruction) it will also be calculated. In case the input data of the consignments is approaching the exceptional gauging, it will be possible to export and check the data in the system of extraordinary consignments. The project also includes calculations of the amount and types of locking devices for securing loads on vehicles. The project results will be used as an input for other specialized information systems, including systems for ordering shipments, for the fixation of goods, or for exceptional consignments. The main project goal is to improve support for proper and safe loading of special goods on open railway wagons. The project will consist of the following actions: Year 1 (2017): System and Data Analysis – Analysis of the current status, assessment of data sources – Analysis and specification of functional requirements of the system – Design of a technical platform system – Design of a System Architecture Year 2 (2018): Preparation of functional, communication system parts for the use of data for oversized goods – Preparation of documents and functional elements of computer components – Preparation of communication system components – Design of Web Services – Design tools for complex data acquisition for oversized transport by rail Year 3 (2019): Design tools for the selection of suitable railway wagons and placement of oversized goods on them – Design of tools for determining computational and graphical display of spatial envelope of oversized goods – Design of tools for automated selection of suitable railway wagons – Design of tools for determining optimal placement of oversized goods on railway wagons according to UIC standards – sliding load securing – Design of tools for determining placement equipment on railway wagons under the conditions of SMGS – a solid mode of equipment securing – Proposal for a comparison of loading goods according to the conditions of the UIC and SMGS Year 4 (2020): Calculation of the securing tools, functional testing and verification – Proposal for the calculation of numbers and technical characteristics of the securing tools to ensure interconnection of the system into extraordinary consignment – Testing of operation with selected users of the system – Compilation of the final project report
