Technological dev. Of germanium product, from leach residue generated from treatment of smelter flue dust of copper

The objective of the project is to obtain a commercial product (prototype) from germanium, by an innovative technology that allows to recover the element of interest in the form of compound from the leach residue (borras) generated in the treatment hydrometallurgy of smelter flue dust.

The project consists of a collaborative R & D & I work between a Chilean and a German entity, both financed with EUREKA funds. The entities will execute the project jointly distinguishing, in each of them, its component and complementarity. That is, must have an equitable contribution to the technological challenge, based on the activities of the work plan in Chile and Germany. The objective of the project is to obtain a commercial product (Prototype) from Germanium (concentrate, precipitated salt, oxide, concentrated solution, others) by an innovative technology that allows to recover the element of interest in the form of compound from the leach residue (BORRAS) generated in the treatment Hydrometallurgy of smelter flue dust It is estimated that the production of leach residue will be 12,000 .- ton / y. We know, on the other hand, that the content of Ge in the leach residue is 800 gr / ton, which means a fine of Ge of 10 ton / y. It is estimated that the economic potential of recovering germanium in the form of GeO2 will be US $ 12.87 million (12.25 Million Euros). The expectations of the project are to cover 8% of the production of GeO2 destined to the manufacture of optical fiber and PET. The main activities of the project consist: - Elaborate a State of the art of Ge recovery technologies; - Physical and mineralogical chemical characterization of leach residue. - Development of a conceptual technological scheme. - Scheme validation using experimental laboratory tests (minimum scale). - Prototype improvement and optimization activity (commercial product of Germanium).
