Hybrid vlc/ir-rf communication for smart space based on multi-functional thermal image sensor module

The project aims to develop hybrid vlc/ir-rf system based on multiple sensing application from a single low-cost/power compact sensor module. It will create a paradigm shift in use of sensing and telecommunication technology in smart spaces by allowing objects to be sensed or controlled remotely.

The development of smart spaces is a hot topic, with a lot of research in academia and industry focusing on a vision of smart environments, and in particular, the smart home by merging technologies from wide range of domains: ubiquitous computing, Internet of Things (IoT), home automation, context awareness, decision support, etc. In this kind of a smart spaces the user will be assisted and supported in the best way during his/her daily live (professional and private) activities. However, despite the spent efforts in research, innovation, and piloting, the smart space has remained a challenging topic for going-to-the-market of innovative solutio, and an unrealized concept in mainstream building environments. The market is composed of actors involved in the development of platforms & enablers (horizontal actors), companies specialized in the applications (vertical actors) and actors developing the building blocks (communication, M2M, Telecom, data security). The vertical actors are divided in various categories which are the quantified-self devices (family, health, fitness), lifestyle devices (entertainment, gaming, toys, gardening, etc...), connected home (home automation, energy efficiency, security) and industrial domains (voluntary activity or work related solutions, eShopping, eBanking, eLearning, edutainment). The project will target the building block actors by developing a hybrid VLC/IR-RF (Visual Light Communication/InfraRed-RadioFrequency) system based on an innovative integrated multi-functional thermal image sensor module with highly sensitive, low cost, and low power consumption. This module will be capable of multi-purpose sensing for the monitoring of the energy consumption and controlling the environment on houses, buildings, and offices, which could avoid the privacy issues with ultra-low resolution (80x80) micro-bolometer, including presence detection, motion detection, and non-contact temperature detection. Also, the module will be able to run an image processing algorithm based on artificial intelligence with low computation and energy requirements, enabling counting of persons or objects, tracking, and distinction of objects such animals. The goal is to develop an integrated multi-functional module with the smallest and smartest infrared design from a single compact sensor. Furthermore, the proposed VLC/IR-RF system will be able to integrate existing sensors to detect the physical and chemical information at home, building and office. Also, the embedded wireless communication such as nb-IoT, WiFi, Bluetooth and LoRa (Low power Wide Area Network) will allow this module to connect the low power node and gateways in peer-to-peer or mesh networks. Therefore, the VLC/IR-RF system will enable low cost and high connectivity inside smart spaces according to each individual requirement functionality such as communicating with IR devices (air conditioning, TVs, etc.), detecting temperature, air quality, presence, and motion etc., enabling sensing applications for energy efficiency, home/office security, ambient assisted leaving (AAL), and Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC). Finally, the system can be deployed for smart building applications, and further extended to more buildings in a neighborhood, therefore leveraging the proposed solution for highly specialized remote sensing & control/management application to the much larger consumer base of a Smart City.
