Design and development of a data base system for long-haul bus traveling and multimodal bus-terminal information providing integrated planning and real-time information for passengers

Passengers using local public transport, national rail or flight services are (with a steady growing level) well supported with integrated timetable and real-time information about their journey. So they are not only able to plan seamless multimodal journeys but also to react to disruptions if necessary. Up to now this is not the case for the increasing number of passengers using long haul buses as appropriate integrated information about the long haul lines are missing. Our proposal aims in developing and setting up data base systems which are established e.g. at bus terminals for long haul bus lines and operated in conjunction with the management system of the bus terminals. Interfaced with the information system of local PT providers these data based shall on one hand serve as a sole point of information for arriving passengers. On the other hand these data bases can provide the currently missing information about long haul lines to the information systems of local PT operators to provide comprehensive information about all public mobility and transport services. Within the EUROSTARS project DISBUS a terminal management system for bus terminals is developed to support the operating crew during their day-to-day works. This management system relies on timetabled and actual arrival data of long-haul bus lines provided by the bus operators. Based thereon we plan to develop an data base system or system component which will gather additional timetabled and real-time data about the long haul bus lines and can provide this information not only for a single bus terminal but - a best - for all stops in that respective region long haul buses are calling. This data base shall be interfaced with other already existing PT information systems and so can serve in several different ways to provide integrated information to travellers: a. provide all necessary data for arriving passengers: - information about interchanges to other long haul bus lines or trains - information about local public transport and other mobility capabilities e.g. taxi, car or bike sharing etc. b. complete local PT data bases and information systems by real time data about long haul bus lines for people departing at home to catch a long haul bus or awaiting travellers c. provide timetable and real-time data to the national PT data base (e.g. DELFI in Germany, the national timetable system in the Czech Republic, BISON in the Netherlands, etc.) The system will be equipped with several different data interfaces to collect data from the different bus operators, to provide data according to standardized interfaces for information systems operated by local PT operators and the national data base as well as open data interfaces for access by end user apps. Moreover it is intended also to provide information to stationary information displays at stops e.g. by means of a WEB interface. The intended data base system will be designed to operate either as standalone system e.g. in conjunction with the national PT data bases or closely connected to the terminal management system of the bus terminal operators. Furthermore the intended development will complement the existing German DELFI system as National Access Point NAP with respect to the ITS directive delegated regulation about EU-wide multimodal travel information services. The planned approach will lead to a cost effectice and flexible approach with a core product and project specific adaptions. The implementation of the project will be based on the knowledge of CHAPS regarding the HW and SW development of systems and interfaces and the knowledge of BLIC with respect to future customers, standardized interface, system demands and management of similar projects.
