Hydrogen cooling for micro-station development

Development of advanced cooling systems to deliver low temperature hydrogen during fueling of fuel cell electric vehicles, with the aim of reducing station footprints, power requirements, and supporting hydrogen station network deployment by offering lower capital cost back-up solutions.

Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) original equipment manufacturers (OEM) will only allow re-filling of their vehicles from systems which are able to demonstrate compliance to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SEA) standard J2601 - Fueling Protocols for Light Duty Gaseous Hydrogen Surface Vehicles [2014]. This standard strictly dictates the allowable temperature and pressure ramp rates during a vehicle re-filling event. This is typically accomplished with mechanical refrigeration and heat transfer fluid systems which are bulky and require a lot of energy to operate. The project team, consisting of HTEC and Air Liquide (AL), has identified a need for alternative station deployment options to support the development and operation of hydrogen station networks for FCEV. These alternative stations require a much smaller form factor and reduced power consumption (at site) than conventional stations. The objective of this project is to advance Air Liquide (AL) and HTEC’s understanding of cryogenic fluids and their ability to address hydrogen cooling for FCEV re-fueling stations. The project team will develop and validate a new cooling system to remove heat from a hydrogen stream during the fill cycle of the station. The solution must be scalable to address the various deployment options under consideration by the project team.
