Forest inventory by smartphone in chile

Based on the katam's disrupting forest measurement technology, the project will research and develop new algoritms, adapted to chilean forestry management methods. The prototype will be tried out in real forest environments by chilean forest companies with objective to improve yield and logistics.

Katam has developed a new disruptive smartphone based method for terrestrial measurement of standing forest. The method has been tested and evaluated in Swedish forest environments and by Swedish forest companies and is approaching initial commercial launch. The current status of the method is in particular appropriate for accurate measurement of tree diameter growth in forest environments that is clean from bushes and undervegitation. The forest sector in Chile, particularly that associated with commercial plantations of exotic species, has played a key role in the economic growth of Chile. The management of e.g. fast-growing Pinus Radiata based plantations requires extensive measurement and monitoring of both quantitative and qualitative growth. Today most of the measurements are done by using manual and analogue measurement equipment. By using the Katam measurement method, the Chilean forest industry would get a more efficient and accurate tool for forest measurement, in particular for forest plantation where the tree diameter growth is an important factor to monitor. The product concept KATAM Forest has potential to result in improved utilization and increased yield of the forestry raw material as well as optimization of forest management, such as production and logistics planning before and after harvesting. This Eureka project objective is to develop and adopt the current KATAM Forest measurement method for Chilean forest environment and forest management as well as prepare for a commercial launch within the region. The new methods will be evaluated and tried out by potential end customers in Chile. The project will be executed in cooperation with the Chilean forest companies CMPC and Arauco. TSST Energy will be the local Chilean hosting partner, responsible for CMPC and Arauco contacts on daily basis. TSST Energy will also activly participate in the software development, in particular when it comes to local verification and system integration.
