Alternative environmentally beneficial forming technologies on the basis of alkali silicate binders

New uses for environmentally beneficial moulding material
binders (alkali silicate basis) for the foundry industry
with optimal properties for moulding material preparation
and used moulding material regeneration/recycling.

In foundry engineering, solutions involving a low consumption of energy and material are sought which also allow non-utilizable residual materials to be avoided or minimized. The processes must allow flexible production and have to be environmentally acceptable. Binder systems based on alkali silicates have good environmental characteristics but also suffer from some disadvantages (poor moulding material decomposition after casting, poor processing characteristics and negative effects in other moulding materials systems). Also, the regeneration and recycling of the basic moulding materials is different. By the development of improved binder systems and testing them by means of adapted forming technologies, and by measures aimed at comprehensive recycling of the used moulding material, the use of conventional moulding material systems with their poor environmental characteristics is inefficient. For this, new binder systems are subjected to comprehensive technological evaluation and practical testing. With respect to used moulding material, consequences for clay-bound recirculated moulding materials will be investigated together with possibilities for regeneration and recycling.
