The development of the nextgen steering system (ngss) controller incorporates the development of a new imbedded digital controller along with a new digital steering head

The development of the Next Generation Steering System (NGSS) Controller incorporates the development of a new imbedded digital controller along with a new digital steering head that enables steer-by-wire functionality through a newly developed CANbus based communication network. The core function of the new controller is to enable precise rudder control on a marine vessel through digital control and proportional hydraulics. In its most basic form, this new steering system will include a rudder follow-up sensor, one or more wheel sensors, the digital controller based on the General Control Platform (GCP), steering control valves, pilot display(s), a technician display, power conditioning and a proprietary KNet communication network. The Digital controller would typically be mounted near the hydraulic valves and would receive communication messages from the wheel and rudder sensors to control the steering control valves.
