Integrating road diagnostics and road design tools and processes

The aim of this project is to create an integrated road diagnostics tool using road doctor(r) and psisuite3d(tm) to provide a more robust road and railway management and design tool based on engineering mechanics and in-field performance.

Much of the road design and management methods used to date have been based primarily on empirical methods specifically developed for new design of pavement systems. Although these methods have been utilized for decades and are considered the foundation of pavement design, they have three primary disadvantages. First, these methods do not draw upon the fundamentals of engineering mechanics and rely heavily on statistical calibration and experience to predict performance. Second, these traditional methods have predominantly been developed for “heavy primary rural highways" and have been loosely calibrated for thinner pavements and integrated urban infrastructure. Third, these traditional methods are not well suited for the rehabilitation design of existing pavements nor can they directly incorporate advances that have been made in diverse road material systems including recycle systems. Roadscanners and PSI Technologies have a strategic alliance agreement to integrate their highly complementary technologies into a state-of-the-art transportation infrastructure asset management and materials/road structural design systems. The integrated technology can significantly help the transportation sector better manage their infrastructure assets, both new and existing. Roadscanners offers Road Doctor®, a mechanistic-scientific based framework for a non-destructive survey system designed for road condition data collection and analysis with features such as visual road inspection, Lidar and GPR technologies. PSI Technologies offers an advanced 3D computational modeling platform, PSISuite3D™, built upon the 3D orthotropic inelastic and damage mechanics framework based on fundamental accepted engineering mechanics principles used in all disciplines of engineering. The aim of this project is to create an integrated road diagnostics tool using Road Doctor® and PSISuite3D™ to provide a more robust road, airport and railway management and design tool based on engineering mechanics and in-field performance. The combined technologies will be capable of assessing road condition while incorporating real-time load monitoring; as well, they will be capable of running 3D simulations using numerical algorithms and advanced mechanistic materials properties to perform sound performance prediction and a life cycle cost economics analysis.
