The ORADEA-GEOTHERMAL EUREKA project comprises three projects: PI ORADEA UNIVERSITY geothermal demonstration power plant (in two project phases) PII Oradea city integrated geothermal energy and fossil fuel district heating system PIII Bihor County environmental impact study and master plan for use of geothermal energy all of which are divided into the following four phases: I. Feasibility study II. Definition III. Implementation IV. Full Exploitation. Project I ORADEA UNIVERSITY Geothermal Demonstration Power Plant: The demonstration geothermal power plant project comprises two implementation phases: Part 1 ORADEA UNIVERSITY full scale geothermal demonstration power plant The existing geothermal power plant at the University location will be renovated with modern equipment and technology. A deep well pump will be installed in the existing artesian well to increase the output capacity. Distribution pumps, system insulation and central heat exchanger, etc. will be renovated. A complete monitoring and control system will be installed for the whole operation. The district heating system will be expanded to nearby government facilities replacing timber fired district heating and thus reducing the emission of green house gases. A computer simulator for this power plant and district heating system will be installed for the University national geothermal training centre for students and district heating operators. Part 2 ORADEA UNIVERSITY full scale geothermal demonstration power plant Reservoir assessment by numerical simulation methods will be used to estimate the long term economic production potential of the Oradea geothermal reservoir. A re-injection of the spent geothermal water from the University well will be implemented. A demonstration cascade usage of the spent geothermal water from district heating will be installed including a tropical greenhouse, wool washing, a health spa, irrigation water and fish farming. Full exploitation of the geothermal demonstration power plan t Included as part of this EUREKA project is the operation and evaluation of geothermal demonstration plant at the UNIVERSITY OF ORADEA for 6 months. The results of this evaluation and the two feasibility studies described in projects 2 and 3 for the district heating systems in Oradea and other cities in Bihor county for the optimal integration of geothermal energy will then be presented to respective sponsoring authorities together with recommended implementation and financing proposals. Project II Environmental impact and feasibility study for integrated geothermal and fossil fuel energy for district heating in Oradea Detailed environmental impact and feasibility study for optimal integration of geothermal energy with the existing fossil fuel power plants for district heating in the city of Oradea. Based on experience from the University demonstration power plant, a thorough investigation will be conducted on the optimal utilization and integration of geothermal energy in the city of Oradea (250,000 inhabitants) in order to clean up the environment as much as possible by replacing the burning of fossil fuels by geothermal energy. The results from the reservoir assessment study will play a significant role in this project phase. The necessary renovation of the existing district heating system, such as the implementation of a modern control system and operation strategy, will be addressed. Project III Environmental impact study and master plan for integrated geothermal and fossil fuel energy for district heating in Bihor A detailed environmental impact study for the utilisation of environmentally friendly geothermal energy for district heating in the whole Bihor county will be presented together with a master plan consisting of feasibility studies for several cities on the optimal utilisation and integration of geothermal energy in Bihor county. An alternative utilisation of waste disposal will also be studied to find an environmentally friendly waste energy utilisation for power generation.
