The development of new, ultra versatile polymer housing for smart water meter industry

The proposed swm-housing project will result in a new, most versatile polymer housing design for smart water meters so far, produced with a new, technologically advanced process of injection moulding of housings and similar products in the field of smart drinking water management solutions.

The main objectives of the proposed SWM-Housing project are: 1. To design and develop a functional prototype of a new, ultra versatile polymer housing for smart water meters, which will represent a significant improvement over current state-of-the-art. 2. To develop innovative new advanced polymer material with higher elasticity modules, different linearity and density and more resistant chemical composition. 3. To develop new technological process for the production (injection moulding) of new housing, which (due to the new polymer material) requires the development of completely new concept of injection moulding tools. Such an advanced and versatile housing design (or such a cost-efficient and fast injection moulding technology) do not currently exist in smart water meter industry. Consequently, market needs in it are not satisfied because current technological solutions and products/components based on these solutions have all been found fundamentally lacking, outdated and anything but cost-effective or efficient. This is mostly because they are either: • Made from aluminium and therefore too heavy and/or chemically questionable for use in drinking water applications. • Made from sub-optimal polymer materials with much shorter life expectancy than needed (10 years instead of 30) and/or limited use in harsher outdoor and underwater environments. • Too expensive due to overlong production cycles, inability to produce more than one type of housing in one injection moulding tool (which also increases energy and material use and/or waste) and inability to ensure constant processing quality of material used (and consequently, of end products). Consequently, none of current solutions is optimal or versatile enough and can represent a serious obstacle to the further expansion and modernisation of smart water meter industry in the future. Without an appropriate solution to the current state-of-the-art deficiencies presented above, there is a very real risk that the smart water meter industry expansion will suffer a severe slow down, despite very positive market trends. To take advantage of these very positive trends and opportunities for further growth, smart water meter manufacturers urgently need SWM-Housing solutions. Only then will they be able to provide affordable, much more versatile solutions, significantly shorter production cycles and much higher production volumes, at much lower energy consumption (due to much lower manufacturing temperatures) than the predominantly aluminium versions used now. The proposed development of a) new, versatile smart water meter housing design and b) new technologically advanced process of injection moulding of housings and similar products in the field of smart drinking water management solutions, will provide the needed technological advance. This will be done by finding the answers to the still unsolved technological problems which both partners will work to solve in the proposed research and development project. By obtaining new knowledge in key technological fields (new advanced polymer materials, optimal smart water meter housing design, technological process of injection moulding of advanced polymer materials) and combining it with the existing knowledge and technological solutions, partners will be able to achieve the envisaged technological advance and, consequently, designated main project results/objectives. The main technological development of proposed SWM-Housing project is a radically new double breakthrough innovation in the field of advanced polymer smart water meter housings and other similar smart measuring solutions for the drinking water management: a new, versatile housing design for smart water meters so far, produced with a new, technologically advanced process of injection moulding of housings and similar products in the field of smart drinking water management solutions.
