Global, live, boreal forest mapping from satellite data.

The consortium members will combine their technologies, expertise and data to develop a platform for producing global, live, boreal forest inventory and maps from satellite data. The platform will serve government and industry who need current, accurate data for sustainable forestry.

Forest inventory information is needed by the forest industry and government to sustainably manage forests. Most forest inventory technologies have update cycles of 5-10 years, and in some cases much longer. Yet many things change in the forest during that time: forests are depleted by logging, fires, insects and disease; renewed by new growth and change. Many parts of the boreal forest have very old inventories: in some northern areas of Canada they are 50 years old. Governments and industry need very current forest inventory information. This helps monitor forest health, track logging activities, detect change, fight forest fires, plan logging activities, make investment decisions, find timber for sale or purchase, and many other uses. We are proposing to develop a platform that produces a live inventory of the global boreal forest. The inventory would be updated at very high frequency, as quick as every five days which, is the refresh rate of the Sentinel 2 satellites. The inventory would contain the following information in 10m pixels: ● Percentage of broadleaf (deciduous) and conifer species. ● Crown coverage—a measure of the density of the forest canopy ● Short vegetation of a metre or two in height ● Very short vegetation or bare mineral soil ● Water ● Change detection of forest cover (eg recent logging, thinning or fires, or recent “greening up”) By incorporating other satellites, such as MODIS, Sentinel-1/3 and Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission, we will possibly be able to include the following features: ● Forest fires ● Non-forested wetlands ● Terrain elevation ● Major tree genus (pine, spruce, fir, birch, aspen). The platform would be created jointly by the three companies listed in this application combining their expertise as follows: ● Arbonaut: global forest inventory expertise, access to historical data that may be used for calibration, and understanding of forest industry market needs in many countries around the globe, specifically Nordic countries and Russia, and patented ArboFiRM technology for forest fire mitigation. ● Terramonitor: software technology that continually downloads Sentinel-2 images as they are captured by satellites, and creates a live “mosaic”, or continuous image, with them ● First Resource Management Group: patented SkyForestTM technology which converts Sentinel-2 images into forest inventory information; expertise in markets needs of Canadian forest industry Clients of the platform would purchase data through either a subscription service or single-purchase based on the number of hectares. They would select the areas of interest either by submitting shapefiles or drawing polygons on a map.
