Development of wood products and processing technologies (umbrella: generates projects, but does not carry out r&d)

Creation of a platform to stimulate r & d and technology
transfer for wood products and in the processing
industries, in order to initiate projects emphasising the
environmentally-friendly role of wood.

The preparatory phase and the EUREKA WOOD INITIATIVE Brokerage Event (17-19th May, 1995, Murau) itself have led to the need to create a platform for the systematic support of actions developed under the WOOD INITIATIVE: The Umbrella aims to awake or develop the need for international cooperation within the wood industry, strengthen the international R & D links between industry and R & D organisations and improve competitiveness of new European projects, processes and services on world markets. Added value will be achieved through the clustering of thematically-related projects undertaken by compatible industry and research partners. The first line of action will be the continued support of the 36 project ideas and topics defined by the participants during the first international Brokerage Event. Project ideas proposed by industry in order to develop better products, processes, services and related activities such as: * Manufacturing: Automation (CAD/CAM/CIM, etc.), sawing technologies, cutting technologies, ergonomics and occupational safety, etc. * Material Properties: Defect detection, stress rating, surface quality, fire behaviour, quality control methods, etc. * Environment: Gluing technologies, surface treatment, impregnation, life cycle analysis, processing emissions, etc. * Energy: Utilisation of production residues and waste wood for heat and power production. * Drying and Steaming: In manufacturing, influence on the material properties, influence on the environment, influence on the energy requirement, process and quality control, etc. * New and Recycled products: Composite products, laminated and composition products, modified wood, recycled old wood, etc. * Building Timber constructions: Prefabricated buildings, large span buildings, multi-storey buildings, bridges, fire protection and behaviour, etc. * Non-load-bearing Products: Doors, windows, floors, ceilings, panels, furniture, fittings, fixtures and connections, etc. Keywords: Renewability, Sustainable Development, Environmental Friendliness, Recyclability and Acceptability (High Touch/High-Tech).
