Industrial application evaluation of high power lasers

Objectives: a. To conduct, as a first phase, applications work so as to promote the industrial use of high power lasers (especially CO2 lasers - 10kW or above). b. To define the principles of coordination of regional initiatives within Europe which will lead to the creation of several laser application workshops. Background: During the Definition Phase of EUROLASER (EU 6) several countries have considered the need to establish applications centres for the industrial exploitation of high power lasers. As a first phase, all 9 countries represented on the CO2 Laser Working Group have agreed to cooperate in a joint Applications Project during the Development Phase which will lead to the establishment of regional applications workshops. The application work described below will assimilate the work proposed in other EUROLASER applications projects, as far as possible. It is expected that the EUREKA projects EU 83 and EU 155 will join the new project, as least partially. Project Plan: The programme will cover a total of 5 years initially but the partners have agreed, in principle, to consider an extension after this time. Starting in 1988, and during the first 3 years, the main activity will be the installation and/or upgrading of high power laser facilities, together with appropriate beam manipulation and work handling equipment. The facilities will consist of high power laser equipment, either existing or under development. High power laser instrumentation and beam diagnostic equipment will also be included. During the installation phase, European collaboration will provide for exchange of personnel on a reciprocal basis (for more than 6 months' duration). The regional laser workshop building teams should include engineers from other partners. It is expected that these Application Projects will maintain close association with the future systems Development Projects in order that the observations and results of the equipment commissioning and applications work experience can be used to guide future equipment and component development within Europe. The Definition Phase work carried out has established that there are a range of application areas available for exploitation of high power laser technology. These relate to the following 3 broad areas: - welding - cutting, and - surface treatment. For all these areas, the development of new high power lasers will open up new materials processing possibilities. For successful industrial exploitation there is a need for basic process technology development, as well as for simple, practical applications demonstrations. It is intended that the proposed collaborative work will encompass both these aspects. Close collaboration of the various national and regional centres will facilitate the most efficient use of European expenditure in laser technology to achieve solutions to basic process technology questions. Successful process development will lead to many new application areas, particularly in welding and surface treatment. A steering committee will be formed to coordinate the work programme and to ensure proper circulation of reports to other EUROLASER projects so as to ensure close cooperation.
