R&td for the wavebob wave energy converter

Joint rtd of an innovative wave energy converter.The results
of an initial proof-of-concept phase are positive. It is now
necessary to design/test (virtually/empirically) at 1/20th
scale and then conduct sea trials of full scale prototype.

The development of a full-scale pilot wave energy converter, that may be deployed offshore, based on an original concept. The Wavebob is a wave energy converter, one of a class broadly known as point absorbers. Many navigation beacons are small-scale 'point absorbers'. The Wavebob concept is a major technological breakthrough. Being largely below the surface, self-reacting and loosely moored, the device is potentially highly seaworthy. At full scale each unit (and they may be deployed in large arrays) may generate over 1MW. The concept has now been verified both analytically and in empirical tests. This R & D programme is to determine the optimum design for a full-scale pilot plant that is practical, efficient and commercially viable. Using the existing team of theoreticians, engineers, naval architects and economists: - Extend proof-of-concept analytical work to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of alternative draft designs for real seas; - Detailed definition of power train and bench testing using servos driven by the output signal from the computer-based simulations; - Outline design of the main structures, ensuring adequate internal spaces, buoyancy, stiffness, etc. Estimate materials and fabrication costs; - Specify and fabricate a 1/20th-scale model; - Assemble instrumentation; run a series of tank tests; - Detailed design of the pilot installation; review suitable and available sites, environmental implications; offshore systems; grid connection; economic evaluation.
