The uncontrolled discharge of wastewater from industry seriously affects the quality of natural running waters. It presents a high risk for the population and can cause great ecological damage which can be economically evaluated. In Slovenia only 30.6 per cent of industrial wastewaster is currently treated. Therefore, efficient, yet cost accessible treatment techniques for industrial wastewaters should be put into service to maintain water quality. Constructed wetlands (CW) provide efficient removal of different contaminants through physical, chemical and biological processes, using natural and artificial substrates and wetland plants. This concept provides an opportunity for efficient "on site" treatment and the reuse of water in different technological processes. CW enhances water quality through a variety of processes that are analogous to traditional biological treatment systems, with higher buffer capacity, efficiency in nutrient and heavy metal removal due to carefully selection substrata. Construction, operation and maintenance costs are significantly lower due to simplified systems where no technical facilities or structures, electricity or highly trained staff are needed. In addition to the above-mentioned characteristics, CW provides pollutant removal, maintains an aesthetic environment and offers the possibility of multipurpose use and reuse of water in industrial processes. CWs have been successfully employed in the treatment of municipal and landfill leachate effluents. However, little is known about the design and operation criteria needed to maximise their effectiveness for pollutant removal in specific industrial wastewaters. Therefore, major CW research and development work needs to be directed at refining our understanding of nutrient and toxic substance transformation, biodegradability, immobilisation and other pollutant processing mechanisms in industrial wastewaters. Four pilot CWs will be designed, put into operation and monitored in order to optimise CW performance for specific kinds of industrial wastewaters. The results will enable the optimisation of the performance efficiency, give economic evaluation and offer guidance for certain industrial wastewater treatment with the use of CW.
