Tele-education software for interactive video lecturing

The development of tele-education software for interactive
video lecturing, based on communication over the internet
in order to make video lecturing cheaper, widely
accessible and highly interactive.

The goal of the project is to develop highly interactive Tele-Education software based on communication over IP networks. Video-lecturing is becoming a normal occurrence in today's universities. More and more teachers are forced to use video conferences or even television in order to reach their students dispersed over different regions. Although video conferences are intended for two-way communication, sometimes it is difficult to maintain interaction with remote students, especially in multipoint video conferences. The absence of video-conferencing equipment sometimes requires students to travel several kilometres to the nearest institution with a video-conferencing room. In most cases, visual contact with students could be replaced by other means of communication, e.g. telephone, chart, e-mail, etc. Students need to see the teacher and his/her presentation, and to have the possibility to react to the lecture. The data-only return channel could be even more informative for the teacher if the data collected from students could be processed in an appropriate manner, and the teacher could see the results from all students (e.g. summary of answers to the question). This project aims to make available a cheaper, widely accessible and highly interactive video-lecturing system, no matter how many students participate in the lecture. In such a virtual classroom it is very important to provide the teacher with the possibility to collect data from all students instantly. This would be possible if appropriate software for teacher/students communication were to be developed. This software with the use of low bandwidth data-only return channel gives good possibilities for students (to submit questions to the teacher, communicate with each other during the lecture, etc.) and teachers (to follow the number of participating students and test their knowledge and understanding on the spot).
