Further commercialisation and utilization of energy wood production

To increase the economic feasibility of energy wood production and consumption and to minimize negative impacts on the environment from district heating systems by increasing biomass consumption in district heating.

The planned direct outcome of the project is a full chain technology and pilot experiment of energy wood production in short rotation willow plantations and a feasibility study of the technology implementation, based on local experiments and experience of EC partners. The experimental part of the project will include a pilot experiment, which comprises all components of the proposed actions - establishment of energy wood plantation, waste processing to produce valuable fertilizer, integration scheme for municipality and commercial structures, consumption of produced energy wood and financial schemes. Project objectives and main components are: - Energy wood production in short rotation plantations - assumption of quantity and regional dispersion of potential resources, development of methodology for energy wood plantation establishment and aftercare based on the project aim to combine wood production and waste utilization problems, selection of planting material, establishment of pilot experiment, economical feasibility study and assumption of impact to environment; - Development of a model for wood waste management at the regional level, investigations of regulatory mechanisms and potential feasibility; - Utilization of organic wastes (wastewater, bio solids, non-toxic organic residues) and wood ash as fertilizers for energy wood plantations - methodology, policy and feasibility study; - Development of administrative and commercial model for energy wood production using waste-derived fertilizers and wood utilization in district heating plants, adaptation of this model for different types of relations of heat producers, waste processing companies, municipalities and land owners; - Assumption of all previous tasks - development of the full chain technology and instruments for feasibility study, assumptions of potential impact to environment, analysis of funding schemes and offer of new product in the market (seminar, promotion using newspapers and project web page). The realisation of the project is planned in three stages: * Project start and development of methodology; * Establishment of experiments and monitoring; * Analysis of results, environmental and financial assessment of the experiment, preparation of reporting materials. The project workgroup represents companies and institutions currently working in the energy sector and which will potentially be involved in the described technology cycle. The project leader, LATVIAN FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE "SILAVA", is responsible for the tasks associated with plantation fertilizing, soil, plant material, water analysis and environmental impact assessment. STRASA KONSULTANTI LTD. is responsible for the project administration, economical study and development of informative materials, including the project web site. AGROBRAENSLE AB, the leading willow-breeding company, will assist the project team in tasks linked to planting material, plantation technology and community legislation.
