Enhancing creativity in new product development

Providing a methodology for product dev. Teams in order to understand weak areas or barriers to creativity. A holisitic approach will be synthesised that utilises the most appropriate creativity tools in order to maximise creative output.

The project focuses on the enhancement of creativity in New Product Development (NPD). Creativity and innovation being very closely linked, the main aim of the project is to help increase the innovation capacity of companies by providing a methodology for their product development teams to understand their weak areas or barriers to creativity, and synthesise a holistic approach that utilises the most appropriate elements of creativity techniques and tools, in a way that will allow them to maximise creative output. There is currently a plethora of creativity tools and techniques, but there is strong evidence to suggest that their uptake is extremely small, while the postulated effectiveness of some popular methods (such as brainstorming) has been eroded by many studies. The integrated approach that will be developed by the proposed project will leverage on existing tools and techniques specifically for the requirements imposed on NPD teams. The approach will help teams to: * Produce novel ideas that are simpler and easier to implement, often using existing technologies, * Gain a competitive advantage based on the power of the concept rather than advanced technologies, * Improve their problem solving capabilities, * Enhance their ability to identify the real issues to be addressed, and * Bring products to the market faster. There are 4 main phases: PHASE 1 Understanding the current situation regarding existing tools and techniques (includes work packages 1-5 and 7). PHASE 2 Mapping of elements of various tools and techniques, mapping of 'creativity chain' and development of integrated methodology (work packages 6, 8 and 9). PHASE 3 Testing and examination of interactions with other NPD tools (work packages 10-12). PHASE 4 Development of training materials, buy-in process and dissemination of results (work packages 13 and 14). End deliverables of the project are the facilitator(s) pack, which includes training materials and buy-in approach. These materials will include all know-how in a multimedia form. Keywords: creativity, New Product Development (NPD), innovation.
