Comprehensive training system using simulators and self-training tools

Development of a comprehensive advanced training system, for the prevention of risks in the work place, using the latest available technologies in simulation and computer-based training programmes.

A Directive for the whole EUROPEAN UNION reinforces the actions required for the prevention of risks and training in the use of labour equipment and, in particular, for the people who lift the materials. The two Spanish and French partners are involved in this field through their training or engineering activities in their respective country. The whole EUROPEAN UNION will be able to make use of the work done in this project. The prevention of risks at the working place in SPAIN has been developed during the last years through new regulations currently in force. Nevertheless, it is necessary to highlight that this sector in SPAIN is less developed that in other European countries, FRANCE being the country that has more advanced legislation and, therefore, a very important related training business. One could say that FRANCE is the most advanced country in this matter worldwide. In SPAIN, the sector of prevention of risks at the working place has undergone important developments recently, although it will still take some years to reach the level in FRANCE. The main French companies who train for risks in the working place have very specific regulations to follow and there is a huge demand for training. However, they must deal with a problem: the standardization of the training and assessment procedures, which depends basically on each individual trainer. Due to the above-mentioned issue, French companies have been incorporating training simulators that ease standardization of the procedure and reduce the dependence on the trainer. But the simulators incorporated are top of the range, with a very high cost and, therefore a very limited number of units, which does not solve the problem. On the other hand, it is necessary to point out that there are top of the range simulators in the market (high-performance ones like the simulators of AIRBUS, BOEING), but also that there are market niches which have not been targeted for two main reasons: 1. Because the training demand in these fields (fork lift truck, mobile elevated work platform, gantry cranes, dumpers, etc.) is so huge, a great number of simulators are necessary to solve this problem. 2. Because there are no bottom of the range high-performance simulators available which could be used by training companies. The main objective of the project is to develop a mobile elevated work platform for a comprehensive and advanced training system that allows: 1. To standardize the training and assessment procedure. 2. To reduce the training costs charged by training companies. The specific objectives of the project can be summarized as follows: 1. To develop a mobile elevated work platform for a comprehensive and advanced training system using the last available technologies, with two main tools: - Mobile elevated work platform simulator, which will allow situations with different levels of risk to be reproduced and evaluated. - Computer-based training (CBT) with a self-training system to allow training companies to obtain an objective and individualized assessment of each worker's training procedure. 2. To develop a mobile elevated work platform for a comprehensive training system in order to standardize the training and assessment procedures. 3. To develop grounding software and electronic codes for the development of a range of low-cost simulators aimed at training on the prevention of risks in the working place, especially for mobile elevated work platforms. 4. Use of advanced low-cost visualization systems to build the simulators. Keywords: simulation, prevention, formation.
