Application driven instant messaging

The product and technology resulting from this project will satisfy the need for an instant messaging (im) gateway capable of routing both mobile and ip (computer) orientated communications.

The ADIM product will enable large corporations and telecom operators to provide customers and partners with a global open instant messaging solution capable of reaching end-users through their Internet Protocol (IP) connected appliances (PC, WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) connected Photo Diode Array (PDA), Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connected consoles, etc.) and their Global Standard for Mobiles (GSM) / General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) / Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) mobiles (2G and 3G mobile phones, GSM/GPRS/UMTS connected PDAs). Currently, time critical messaging solutions usually cover the need for: - Peer to peer IP based (PC based) instant messaging solutions enabling person-to-person communication and presence detection (such as Multimedia Support Network (MSN) Messenger, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, Trillian, Vayusphere, Ego Networks, etc.). - Mobile oriented gateways capable of transmitting Short Messaging System (SMS), Multimedia Messaging System (MMS), and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Push messages to various 'SMSC/MMSC' oriented protocols used by mobile operators. - A global instant messaging infrastructure delivering a global instant messaging solution directly to the end user in Application Service Provider (ASP) mode (the only - currently postponed - offer being the Microsoft .NET My Services initiative). Main limitations are that: - Peer to peer, community oriented, IP instant messaging solution target 'person-to-person' (or group-to-person/group) communication, not 'application to person' communication. - Mobile oriented gateways target 'application to person' communication, but do not allow rich user interaction, regardless of terminal and operator capabilities. We aim to: - Provide an 'application to person' IP oriented instant messaging technology. - Combine it with a wireless (SMS/MMS/WAP-Push) gateway. - Interconnect wireless messaging with IP instant messaging. - Add an application driven subscription layer. - Obtain a global instant messaging product allowing large corporations and telecom operators to signal and connect mobile and computer (or WiFi connected) users.
