Secure personal digital assistants

Generic smart card reader for different personal digital assistants to meet the demands of people with increasingly mobile jobs. The reader can be used for a number of applications, such as secure banking, health care and secure signing of documents.

People are becoming more and more mobile for their jobs. The demand to be able to access e-mail, Internet and the company intranet wherever you are is getting stronger. The terminals used are getting smaller and more portable and the PDA's (Personal Digital Assistant) processing power is now at the same level a PC was a few years ago. The problem with this development is that a PDA is not a secure device, but it can be turned into one in a few different ways. The most secure way to do this is by adding a smartcard reader. By doing this you also open up for many more interesting mobile applications based on the smart card technology and a PDA: * Credit Card - you can make secure payments using your credit card e.g. VISA, Mastercard, AmEx. * Secure Login - the access to a company intranet can be secure using wireless networking e.g. WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). * Secure Signing - documents can be digitally signed by using your electronic ID (Identifier) card. * Secure Banking - you can login to your Internet bank and pay bills or buy stocks wherever you are. * Tickets - you can use your card to pay the flight ticket and download it onto your smart card, which then will be used as an e-ticket at the check in. * Health Care - the doctor identifies himself and can access the patient's medical records. Prescriptions can be stored on the patient's ID card and used at the pharmacy. The aim of this project is to develop a small cost efficient smartcard reader that supports the majority of all currently available PDAs running on a MICROSOFT Pocket PC operating system.
