Development and production of special furniture

Development of furniture components, solitaires and furniture sets for special use (such as old people's homes) by employing the strategy of complex development. This includes design, construction technology, waterproofing and surface finish practices.

The aim of the project is to develop furniture components, individually used solitaires and furniture sets to be used in old people's homes, geriatric centres, sanatoriums, public waiting rooms, railway stations, sport halls and as public urban furnishings by employing the strategy of complex development, which includes design, construction technology, waterproofing and surface finish practices and testing. Only those materials that evoke a homelike environment will be used. Metal-tube structures are therefore generally avoided, since these could be associated with hospitals. The wooden lamella may, thus, be regarded as optimal stock for the production of furniture for use by the elderly. The structural strength of the wooden lamella, which is substantially better than that of solid wood, makes it possible to design strong and yet delicate structures that are lightweight and easy to handle. Some of the specific requirements involving the function, design and service life of the furniture, especially the issues of long life and touch-amiability and general sensual pleasantness, will be dealt with through development and testing, while paying particular attention to ergonomic quality and some environmental implications. The variety of possible shapes provided by the lamella technology constitutes the main driving force for the creation of ergonomically suitable furniture. The lamellae are moulded on the physiological bends of the spine, and their flexibility allows for long-term quality sittings, the pleasantness of which is moreover enhanced by the natural warmth radiated by the material used, as opposed, for instance, to the cold steel structures. In designing furniture for use by the elderly, a range of chairs, semi-armchairs, armchairs, double-benches and footstools complying with the differing requirements concerning dimensions, adjustability and the design of the grab handles and seats will also be developed. With this type of furniture, both high stability and mobility comfort parameters must be attained; any special requirements involving particular kinds of upholstery and its maintenance must be taken into account; unconventional elements of grab handles bearing significant touch-related implications must be designed; the backrest must be extendable to form a headrest. Furthermore, in the field of design and production of furniture for use by the elderly, it is intended to also develop table sets and complementary furniture, including the storage areas, made of the same base material in such a way that the whole set could be treated as a single unit. The outcomes of the research on waterproofing and surface finishing may be applied in designing furniture for halls and waiting rooms. The particular use of these kinds of products requires the positioning of metal fittings and footings on the wooden lamellae. In addition to the attractive design, the products are expected to retain a high degree of variability while keeping the same ergonomic quality, excluding, however, any upholstery. As regards the range of products designed for the public urban furnishings, the main project involve the development of benches and seats to be used at urban transport service stops. The other components are based on the combination of wood and metal, and the major development activities are governed by the attempt to achieve compatibility of such individual elements.
