New approaches to land reclamation and utilization of deposited ash

Solving the problem of utilising waste materials, such as slag and fly-ash mixtures, stable sewage sludge and other wastes, in the production of artificial soil suitable for land reclamation and remediation of ash deposit sites.

The state-of-the-art processing of secondary raw materials such as fly ash and sewage sludge is not satisfactory. Only a negligible part of the total ash produced is utilized as a secondary raw material while the major part of the total ash produced is deposited at waste sites. Similarly, the level of utilization of sewage sludge in the production of reclaimed artificial soils is low. The project will address the problem of utilization of waste such as slag and fly ash mixtures, stable sewage sludge and other wastes in the production of artificial soils that can be used in land reclamation and remediation of ash deposit sites and other affected areas, e.g. areas with persistent contamination. The project will also include the testing of selected plant species for their survival rate, resistance, quality and productivity at the given model conditions. The main aim of the project is to carry out independent research in order to develop new technologies for the production of artificial soil mixes consisting of slag, fly ash, stable sludge and other components. The soil will be suitable for the reclamation of ash deposit sites, for growing plants, to enable the use of the area for leisure time activities and the effective production of biomass, which will be used for power production, etc. The practical outcome of the project will be a complex system consisting of technical information and technological, ecological and economic data, which are necessary for the introduction of new technologies and facilities. The resultant system will be applied in the preparation and performance of individual tasks. When finished, the project will provide the following outcomes: utilization of waste materials such as ash and sewage sludge from EOV; reduction of costs in land reclamation and transportation, revaluation and utilization of reclaimed land after remediation by using artificial soil. The technology for the production of artificial soil and the recultivation of ash deposit sites using the proposed approach is economically and ecologically advantageous because the production of artificial soil will be performed in the area of the particular deposit site. The project is divided into three sub-projects: PROJECT 01 'TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF MIXED ARTIFICIAL SOIL' This project will address the problem of mass-produced artificial soil mixes of guaranteed properties according to user demands and in relation to the species of plants grown on reclaimed sites. The following properties of artificial soil mixes will be required and controlled: weight per volume, moisture, moisture-retention, degree of aeration, acidic or basic reaction, the content and range of nutrients, and other properties. Basic raw materials for the production of artificial soils intended for land reclamation will be as follows: slag produced in power stations and heating plants, slag-ash mixtures, slag from incineration plants incinerating municipal waste, stable sewage sludge, and other components such as excavated earth, tailings from queries, wood waste, etc. The basic research and the development of soil mixes intended for reclamation will be performed in the first phase of Project 01. A set of recommended model procedures to prepare reclaimed soil will be an outcome; each procedure will be supported with the following documents: expert opinion issued by specialized institutions, permission for the pilot plant production of soil mixes and the permission for bulk utilization of the soil mixes. The second phase of Project 01 will be aimed at the development and practical verification of two basic methods for the production of artificial soil. The first method will be the stationary industrial production of soil in a semi-mobile mixing device while the other method will be the preparation of soil in the particular affected site using powerful rotovators, rotary ploughs, etc. PROJECT 02 'TECHNOLOGY FOR RECLAMATION OF ASH DEPOSIT SITES' The main goal of this particular project is to verify the suitability of selected types of artificial soil for the reclamation of ash deposit sites. The majority of research will be carried out at the experimental area at the sludge-drying bed in Oslavany u Brna. The first phase of Project 02 will verify the suitability of selected plant species planted in verified artificial soils. The survival rate of these plants will always be compared with that reported for particular plants grown in common soil at a selected site. Furthermore, growth properties, the quality of rootage, the length and the quality of biological maturity of soil and other properties will also be monitored. The second phase of Project 02 will focus on the growing of verified species of grasses and dendriflora in experimental areas. Modelled conditions of bulk plantation during reclamation and remediation of ash deposit sites using artificial soil will be applied. Different conditions such as controlled watering, additional fertilization, tending, etc., will also be modelled. PROJECT 03 'GROUNDS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES' The subject of Project 03 will be to collect all results and outcomes and introduce them into a unified catalogue - in a form containing model solutions - and to define a proposal for the mass application of the results. The outcomes of the project will be as follows: * Technical survey of ash deposit sites aiming in particular at the evaluation of the suitability of these sites in relation to the proposed methods of land reclamation and remediation. * Technical survey of wastewater treatment plants focussing on the evaluation of the suitability of stabilized sewage sludge for the production of artificial soil mixes and the use of such mixes in the reclamation of ash deposit sites. * The catalogue of model solutions and records for the design and performance of reclaiming ash deposit sites for different purposes (forest parks, recreational areas, production of quality wood, growing of biomass to be used for power production, etc.) * The program of realization of the project containing specification of ash deposit sites suitable for reclamation during the next years, including specification of local sources of sludge for the production of artificial soils. The main benefits of the project are the utilization of waste products for the production of artificial soil, elaboration and verification of model composition of artificial soil and definition of a proposal for the reclamation and remediation of ash deposit sites using artificial soils, respecting its future intended use and the suitability of dendriflora or other plants in the area.
