Environment-friendly viscose fibres for textiles

30% of the global production of viscose fibres is used in blends with polyester. In this project, special viscose fibres, which are more environment-friendly and intended for use in blends, will be developed to replace the standard viscose fibre.

PREDILNICA LITIJA is a manufacturer of yarns and threads with an annual output of approx. 4,500 tons of yarn. Through major investments in new technologies in recent years, cell production has been introduced that enables high flexibility and manufacture on customers' request. Natural, synthetic and man-made fibres, elasthanes and filaments are used in production. All raw materials are imported. Production is technologically intensive and runs continually in 4 shifts. Investment in equipment pertaining to each work post in production amounts to at least 50,000 euro. The scope of business operations increases by approximately 10% per annum. A major part of the manufacture is intended for the fashion segment of customers in the E.U. markets, where 88% of production is located. For a future growth and to spread the risks, the strategic objectives of the company also include an increase in sales in the East European markets and in Asia. LENZING AUSTRIA, the leading manufacturer of viscose fibres, has been developing special viscose fibres that, in blends with polyester, replace the standard viscose fibres. These special viscose fibres make new finishing procedures possible, which are more environment-friendly and more cost effective. The trademark of the fibre is Rainbow. LENZING has chosen PREDILNICA LITIJA as a development partner in the processing of new fibres because it is one of the few spinning mills in Europe that includes cell production, which is flexible enough to provide for quality repeatability that is obtained and ensured by the controlled technological parameters. The objective of both companies is to increase the scope of business operations and, at the same time, to transfer the new developments from the first stages of obtaining fibres and production of yarns to the stages of manufacture of fabrics and knitted fabrics in Eastern Europe and RUSSIA. Target customers will benefit from the lower costs of manufacture, dyes and power, and a more environment-friendly technology, all of which will improve the competitive position on the market. The latter will improve the growth in production and sales, as well as added value per employee. In addition to the use of Rainbow fibre for yarns in blends with polyesters, this fibre is advantageous in the manufacture of knitted fabrics in blends with other viscose and natural cellulose fibres because it is dyed with a different group of dyes, which decreases the number of operations required to achieve the same number of colour patterns. IRSPIN (the SLOVENIAN SPINNING INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE) is a spinning R & D centre in SLOVENIA whose experts cooperate in the development of new yarn types and the introduction of new technologies in spinning mills. It provides technological support to yarn customers in the textiles finishing procedures. Its own fibre and yarn-testing laboratory is also under development. The statutory activity of the INSTITUTE OF KNITTING TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGIES (TRICOTEXTIL) is connected to research and development of new techniques and technologies for textiles, particularly for knitting, hosiery and clothing production. The Institute is also a centre for vocational education, organising courses and training for industry. The realisation of the research project will increase knowledge in the field of new techniques and technologies for textiles, especially in ecological chemical treatment. This will be exploited in practice in the production of new knitted materials. The objective of this development project is to replace yarns in blends of polyester and standard viscose with the newly developed yarns in blends of polyester and Rainbow. This blend is the most important in the world for the manufacture of fabrics and knitted fabrics, in particular in the clothing industry, as polyester provides for the durability of products and the viscose fibre for the softness, comfort and moisture control. Despite an accelerated migration of the textile industry to Asia, E.U. Member States still represented 20% of the entire world export of textiles in 2000. The situation for the production of clothing is different; it is decreasing drastically. In the opinion of the partners, the development of environment-friendly and extremely high-tech yarns and textiles will remain in Europe in the future. Yarns obtained from this raw material composition are intended for the fashion industry. Owing to the rapid development of this industry, it is important that suppliers collaborate closely with manufacturers up to the stage of textiles manufacture. However the geographical distance does not affect the manufacture of ready-made clothing. Keywords: special, fibres, rainbow.
