Quality and defects in yarns and fabrics

Aim: to investigate defects in textile yarns and fabrics then to develop procedures for recognition, classification and detection of causes and establishment of influences on quality parameters with the development of procedures for preventing and remedying negative effects.

The purpose of this project is to help SMEs (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) in the textile industry to manufacture high quality goods by identifying new man-made fibres destined for garments and technical textiles. Measures to reduce total productions costs and thus increase the organisation's profit include reducing expenses, optimising the processing of products, and reducing the occurrence of defects in the textile product process. Opportunities for commercialising textile products depends on many parameters including items such as raw materials, finishing technology and the occurrence of defects. Defects form part of a fabric's negative indicators, which represent a decrease in desired quality. There are many reasons for defects. Similar type defects may come from different or similar causes. Processing may also generate defects, which appear in different forms. Research and Technological Development will investigate defects in textile yarns and fabrics in order to develop rapid procedures for: - identifying yarns and fabric defects; - classifying yarns and fabric defects; - detecting causes that may produce defects; - detecting influences on textile products; - establishing optimum measures for preventing and eliminating the detected defects. The goal of this project is to develop innovative procedures for identifying defects by combining inspection techniques with modern analysis techniques: - fineness of the yarns; - torsion of the yarns; - chemical substances used in finishing processes; - colour fastness of dyed yarns/fabrics; - atlas defects of the fabrics; - FTIR-ATR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy-ATR), Raman, UV-VIS spectroscopy for specific absorbance of chemical compounds, and specific groups; - scanning electronic microscopy for microstructure of surfaces and cross-section analyses. This project will see the development of a data base with defect types for yarn fabrics and which will be structured by: denoting the defect, position in yarn or fabric; causes; influences on yarn and/or fabric; optimum measures for preventing and eliminating the defect. The yarn and fabric defects will be classified and analyzed on the basis of the following aspects: - raw material defects; - defects from spinning; - defects from weaving process; - defects from finishing process; - description of the defects. The new procedures will be used for: - eliminating possible negative influences on textile products caused by deficiencies in the processing chain; - textile product inspection bodies; - textile product certification bodies; - consumer protection.
