New electrical postman helper: industrial part

Study and development of innovative electric power train systems that will be integrated in personal mobility devices for helping postmen with their mail deliveries in urban areas.

The NEPH project is related to the study and development of an innovative electric power train system range that will constitute the key component of a personal mobility device range for helping European postmen: * do their mail deliveries in urban areas * contribute to the 'European Sustainable Development Policy' The NEPH power train range is expected to be integrated into the following devices: * Electric assisted trolley * Electric assisted bicycle and related types (three-wheelers, four-wheelers) Some other mobility devices (moped family for example) could be considered in a second step. The NEPH project is organised around a consortium based on European Postal Operators and managed by POSTEUROP (EU) and is composed of the 2 following phases: - 1st Phase: NEPH Industrial * Development of an innovative power train system range * Time frame: 2004-2005 * EUREKA Funding - 2nd Phase: NEPH Demonstration * Commercial launching based on demonstration projects based on Postal Operators, City Authorities & other interested parties * Setting up associated services: maintenance, etc. * Time frame: 2005-2006 * EC funding: DG Tren/Civitas Initiative The NEPH INDUSTRIAL project will be performed by the following consortium: * Project co-ordinator and battery manufacturer: SAFT (FRANCE) * Deputy project co-ordinator and bench tests: VUB and POSTEUROP (BELGIUM) * Motor system manufacturer: HEINZMANN (GERMANY) * Mobility platform manufacturer: MIFA A.G. (GERMANY), LUDO (BELGIUM), EXPRESSO (GERMANY) and ROMEC (UNITED KINGDOM) * Specifications and internal test validation: DE POSTE (BELGIUM), FINLAND POST CORPORATION (FINLAND), LA POSTE (FRANCE), POSTE ITALIANE (ITALY), TPG POST (THE NETHERLANDS) & ROYAL MAIL GROUP (UNITED KINGDOM). * Others: some additional partners are expected to join the project: postal operators, etc. The NEPH INDUSTRIAL project is composed of the following phases: * Phase 1: Specification of the electric power train range WP 1.1: Specification of the postal mobility devices WP 1.2: Specification of the electric power system range * Phase 2: Implementation WP 2.1: Development of the power train components WP 2.2: Development of mobility platforms WP 2.3: Electric power train integration on mobility platforms WP 2.4: Bench tests WP 2.5: Internal Postal tests. The output of the NEPH INDUSTRIAL project will be the internal qualification of an electrically powered train system for postal mobility devices: It will therefore be possible to take part in the CIVITAS initiative by launching the demonstration phase (NEPH Demonstration project) in order to look at the societal/human issues, to qualify the maintenance/after sales service and to open new mobility markets. For this demonstration phase, the electric power system range will be sold (on a manufacturing cost basis) to mobility devices manufacturers (bicycle manufacturer, etc.) selected by each European Postal Operator to perform the operating tests in some European cities.
