Power-led 'sealed for life' explosion-proof medium intensity obstacle light with an intensity of 2,000 cd; especially built (designed) with a clear lens and depending on the situation, a number of white or coloured (red) led's.

The objective is a POWER-LED 'sealed for life' explosion-proof medium intensity obstacle light with an intensity of 2000 cd; specially built (designed) with a clear lens and depending on the situation, built up with a number of white or coloured (red) LEDs. Technological expertise is necessary for the heat elimination by dissipation or absorption of the POWER-LEDs, the electronic device as well of the enclosures. Technological expertise is also necessary for the light control of a large group of POWER-LEDs interacting with each other. In terms of communication this is with the luminaries, as the POWER-LEDs have their own intelligence (algorithmic digital control) by means of embedded software. The latest knowledge in this field is far less comprehensive than envisaged in cases of regular obstacle lights (with incandescent bulbs or solid state Xenon bulbs). For example, the expertise is focussed on a long life, powerful light output and robustness. The POWER-LED technology offers properties such as small size, instant response, low-voltage application, and a semiconductor nature. LED's for industrial purposes have all been available. White light has been a much trickier proposition. Even with the latest breakthroughs, great efforts will have to be made before this will be readily available and start to become cost effective enough. POWER-LEDs for a medium-intensity obstacle light is a worldwide novelty. Problems to be solved are; - light colouring according to the standards for obstacle lights; - economical lifetime of 15 to 20 years by 4,000 effective working hours a year; - explosion-safe use; - light window in clear glass in case of a filter (12% luminous loss in stead of 82% by red filter); - sealed electronic device for 24 Volt current driving including heat elimination; - imbedded software for the POWER-LED flash/blinking electronic. - The heat elimination and the temperature sensitivity as well as the regulation of the electric current are very complex problems that, in cases of a regular obstacle light, may contain many unknown components. The most important aspects for IMT in THE NETHERLANDS as main participant, are the development of the fitting/enclosure and the assembly of the medium-intensity POWER-LED obstacle light. For ITALSMEA in ITALY, the development and production of the integrated 'sealed for life' electronic device with embedded electronic control components is an important aspect. RENA ELEKTRONICA in THE NETHERLANDS, as subcontractor to IMT, is focused on the production of the mechatronic components and imbedded software. The consultant STL in ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL, as subcontractor to IMT, is focused on the fundamental knowledge for certifying and conducting tests. The project is divided into 5 tasks: Task 1 - Research into heat elimination: * Heat dissipation and or absorption; * Heat control and type of enclosures; * Type of glass; Task 2 - Research into POWER-LEDs and accompanying embedded software: * Obsolescence of POWER-LEDs; * Architecture signal generating for function control and current steering; Task 3 - Development of enclosures: * 'Sealed for life' enclosures; * Positioning of POWER-LEDs and light output angles; * Light intensity control and colouring; Task 4 - Development of software and electronics: * Software and electronics; Task 5 - Development and production of prototype obstacle lights: * Prototypes and tests.
