Advanced laser renovation of old paintings, paper, parchment and metal objects

The project objective is the development, construction and optimisation of advanced laser renovation systems with automatic control of level cleaning and laser beam scanning.

The main aim of the project is the design, development and optimisation of new, advanced laser systems and technologies for the renovation of paintings, organic substrates, like paper and parchment, and metal objects. Particular objects of project are as follows: a) Development and implementation of new, advanced laser cleaning systems based on high repetition rate, diode pumped, tuneable, Q-switched solid state lasers, including an ultra short pulsed system (fs, ps), with the utilisation of Nd:YAG (Nd:Yttrium-Aluminium-Garnet), Er:YAG as well as new laser media. Development of TEA CO2 laser cleaning systems. b) Development and implementation of an automatic system for scanning laser beams during the cleaning of flat surfaces (different objects, different encrustation and substrates). c) Studies of sensor systems for automatic detection of the distance to the surface coupled with the system of 'dynamic focusing' or dynamic laser fluency control for irregular surfaces. d) Optimisation (if needed) of complementary renovation techniques, and evaluation of the results based on the experience of consortium partners. e) Creation of databases or supplements to the existing ones (objects, procedures).
